The Legion of Mary (LOM) meets on Thursdays from 7:15-8:45 p.m. at St. Columbkille’s Sacred Heart Center (543 N Jefferson St, Papillion).  For more information, call Cathy Badura, president of the Legion of Mary combined praesidium for St. Columbkille and St. Gerald, at 402-677-5688.

WHAT IS IT?
The largest apostolic organization of lay people in the Catholic Church with well over two million active members in almost every country of the world. In 2021, the Legion celebrated its 100th anniversary worldwide. It has been approved by the last six Popes.

WHAT DOES IT DO?
It makes its members better Catholics, through a balanced program of prayer and service in union with the Holy Spirit as He operates through Mary. Works may include visiting the elderly, assisting with evangelization and spiritual needs within the parish and community, etc. It gives Catholics an opportunity to do something positive for the Church, while at the same time deepening their spiritual life and strengthening their Catholic faith.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
“Active” members meet together once a week for prayer, planning, and discussion in a family setting. They do a couple of hours of definite work each week in pairs or alone. “Auxiliary” members pray the rosary and Tessera prayers daily. Auxiliary members are invited to larger Legion of Mary meetings/events several times a year.

WHO CAN BELONG?
Any Catholic, who would like to draw closer to Jesus and His Mother is welcome! Every active member starts with a three-month probation to learn the proven system of the Legion. Auxiliary members do not have a probation period.

HOW DO I START?
Come to a meeting as a guest to see how the Legion works. All you need is a willingness to sacrifice a little of your time and energy for the greatest reason in the world: your love of God.

Boys and girls in grades 5 through 8 are invited to assist at weekend masses as altar servers. Training classes are held several times throughout the year. Watch the bulletin for specific dates.

EMHCs assist the parish family by distributing the Body and Blood of Christ during Mass. Some EMHCs also take Communion to the ill and homebound. Those new to the ministry may begin serving as an EMHC after having attended an Archdiocesan training session followed by a mandation liturgy conducted by the Archbishop. After having completed the archdiocesan training and mandation you will be required to attend a St. Gerald Liturgy workshop. Previously mandated Ministers of Holy Communion who wish to serve at St. Gerald should contact the coordinator.

EMHC Homebound

Proclaim God's word to the parish community during daily and Sunday Masses. Those interested in being a Lector will be required to attend the Archdiocesan training session followed by a mandating liturgy conducted by the Archbishop. Lectors also attend a St. Gerald Liturgy Workshop to receive parish guidelines. Training and mandation occur annually each fall.

Volunteers patrol the 96th & Q parking lot during weekend Masses, holy days of obligation, and weekend events. Teams are usually scheduled for one Mass a month. Patrolling is done on foot or in vehicles, observing and reporting incidents without confrontation.

A Sacristan (man or woman) prepares the materials necessary for the daily and Sunday liturgy and other liturgical days. This includes opening up the church and setting out the bread, wine, vessels and tangible needs of the worshipping community. Sacristans work under the direction of the Pastor and have a spirit of service that works in harmony with the presiding priest. Sacristans are required to be a mandated EMHC.

Signers for the Hearing Impaired provide an important service for our Parish. This manual form of communication adds a wonderful dimension to our worship service. We are moved by the graceful motions of the hands of those who sign as the Word of God is presented to us in these two forms. Signing is generally done during the 9:30 am Mass on Sunday at 96th & Q.

The goal of the Welcoming Committee is to enable and empower St. Gerald's mission to "...invite and welcome everyone to come and share our Master's joy." The Welcoming Committee is dedicated to implementing new and improved ways to show an outpouring of God's love to every individual we come across.

  • Greeters - Open the door and warmly welcome parishioners and guests arriving for weekend Mass. This is a great opportunity for families to participate.

  • Welcomers - Greet and assist guests entering the church for Mass. They also lead Welcome Sessions for new parishioners.

  • Ushers - The ushers welcome parishioners and guests, assist them in participating in worship, and ensure the smooth flow of the liturgy.
